Hail a Baxi

images3.jpg Monday, 13 October 08 - 07:52 AM (GMT +12:00)
By Marie-Claire Andrews in Buzz

Baxi launches this month..brainchild of the mad and fabulous Vicky Ha you'll now be able to hail a baxi and be biked across town to your next destination.

Human powered pedicabs, how much greener can you get?!  And no competition for the taxis - I mean, someone still has to take people up Boulcott Street and Mount Vic

Each Baxi® can take two grown ups in comfort and considerable style. And you get to choose what you pay - there will be no set tariff. Passengers will be able to negotiate their fare with their Baxi® pilot, or to decide at journey’s end what the trip was worth.

This fantastic new start up is launching at Southern Cross on Tuesday 21st, from 5:30pm.  Great media opportunity (the bikes will be there) and if you're keen on becoming a pilot (yeah thighs of steel!) or want to advertise on the baxis, contact Vicky. haha@baxi.co.nz

New business mag for Wellington launches soon

images3.jpg Friday, 20 June 08 - 09:30 AM (GMT +12:00)
By Marie-Claire Andrews in Buzz

Been a busy few weeks hence the blog silence, very bad form I know.  Still plenty of news to fill the gap - particularly excited about the launch of In-Business in a week or so - a busines magazine by Wellingtonians for Wellingtonians.  Tim Collins is the entrepreneur behind it and is another expat that's just fallen for this awesome city and wants to tell its stories.

Check out the column from Frances and I - Sects in the City - where we review quite candidly the best and worst networking opportunities around town.  All feedback even rotten tomatoes gratefully received...

Annual subscription is something daft like $65 so well worth it.

Plan HQ get gold

images3.jpg Friday, 02 May 08 - 09:03 AM (GMT +12:00)
By Marie-Claire Andrews in Buzz

Wellington held the tenth Gold Awards ceremony last night - and 800 odd people in the TSB arena watched as PlanHQ were the first gold award winner!  Yay!

The team won in the 'Emerging Gold' category, and it was pretty impressive seeing as the product's been live for just over a year, talk about 'emerging' - especially as the worthy competition did have quite a few more years under their collective belts.

Have to say, from an event perspective the food was way better than last year and the flow of the evening better managed.  Wasn't starving at the end of it, though the Whittakers party packs in the centre of the table helped.  And helium balloons, endless, endless squeaky fun.

Congratulations Tim, Amiria, James, Jeremy and Rowan (representing the team at the only table that managed to get it's party pack to lift off with the help of 24 helium balloons...)

Angel Investing

images3.jpg Tuesday, 08 April 08 - 05:34 PM (GMT +12:00)
By Marie-Claire Andrews in Buzz

Angel HQ lifted off a couple of weeks ago with our first investment evening - three excellent local ventures pitching to the newly formed club.  I'm not buying into the doomsayers that say lack of dealflow will hinder the club, the opportunities are definitely out there - but we do have a challenge to bring in angels-in-waiting to grow the membership.  These are angels who don't yet know they're angels, who have never invested in a business, who qualify for the club but are worried about what due diligence actually entails and whether they even have the time never mind the ability to do it!

If that feels like you, check out this video:  Experienced angel investors, Ron Conway, Founder of Angel Investors LP, and Mike Maples, Founder of Maples Investments, provide a rare look into the ins and outs of angel investing. Conway and Maples discuss how angel investors assess opportunities, provide assistance to entrepreneurs and transition start-ups to larger venture investments or exit.

It's great for you entrepreneurs too - Conway and Maples provide advice about finding one's passion and developing that passion into new ventures, including insight into how much money to raise and how to manage that money after it is in the bank.

Feedback from business advisors, mentors, coaches

images3.jpg Tuesday, 01 April 08 - 04:03 PM (GMT +12:00)
By Marie-Claire Andrews in Buzz

I think a really good business advisor is one that fills in the gaps, that creates strength where there is weakness and gets out of the way when they're not needed - that's the way I work with my clients anyway!

In my role at PlanHQ I'm meeting some amazing advisors, who know how to inspire conversations around the challenges businesses face as they achieve their plans.  They're using PlanHQ to give them the infrastructure to support their clients, provoke real and aspirational conversations about achieving - and not achieving -  goals, and to upskill their clients in the benefits of transparency and collaboration.

MakeItHappen will share some of the success stories soon.  In the meantime, if you're a business advisor, mentor or coach I'd love your feedback on if and how PlanHQ fits into your business model:

Flight of the minicab

images3.jpg Thursday, 07 February 08 - 10:25 AM (GMT +12:00)
By Marie-Claire Andrews in Buzz

After two years of renovating, our plane is in the air!  Thanks to a stunning Waitangi Day she took to the skies over Paraparaumu with test pilot Elliott on board for a spectacular debut.

Arghh I can't upload the video file, both Google and YouTube cut it short - like to 2 seconds in the middle.  What's all that about...????

Anyway, apparently there's a couple of issues with the trim and she's very very twitchy - because she's so light, just being made of wood, fabric, blood, sweat and tears.  Elliott took her for a hoon around the circuit and reported everything went well but it was too bumpy for passengers to give it a go.

We bought her off trademe and renovated her in our house where I learnt more than I ever thought I would about glue and fabric and aeropaint.  My conservatory was the workshop, the gym the paint shop and the carport the spray booth.  What a tolerant woman I am!!  Her lovely new propellor which everyone comments on was a $1500 investment because the old one was, according to our advisor, not repairable.  The propellor maker later told us he could have fixed it for $200.  Lesson learnt - choose your advisors wisely!!!

The rise of the confederacy

images3.jpg Wednesday, 30 January 08 - 01:37 PM (GMT +12:00)
By Marie-Claire Andrews in Buzz

There's a movement happening around town and it's going to make a real difference to our region's business.  You will feel its effects soon!

I tried to build a business that would help ambitious business owners reach their goals.  It wasn't the right approach.  What is being built now, a confederacy of intelligent, strategic, results focussed, amazing people is much more the way to go.

What I'm describing is an emerging organic network that is coming together to support the region's businesses and help them grow.  The right people at the right time on the right projects.  Unencumbered by politics, not a methodology or framework or socialisation process in sight, just real life, real experience, real results.

And its not a charity - this is the way to get rich too.  We each have our own personal and private goals for wealth and lifestyle, as well as the driver that brings us together - seeing Wellington business succeed.

I think its a natural response to the environment we find ourselves in.  Community minded people are disillusioned with a stodgy, self serving public sector and local government riddled with patch protection and uber egos.  Ambitious leaders are disatisfied with management structures that don't recognise and develop their potential.  Results focussed people like to create something from nothing and then hone their talents in a new environment.  The remaining benefits of being an employee - stable pay...well there's money out there and with a network around you the stable income will come.

So, the network is gathering momentum.  Watch this space
